“Comfort and Joy”

2 Corinthians 1:1-11

 Introit:  “Be Ye Glad”

Call To Worship:

Leader: The Lord is our shepherd.

People: All our needs will be met. God provides a place and time for deep rest and

restoration. God leads us beside still waters; restores our souls and leads us in

right paths. We do not need to be afraid; for God is with us; now and forever.

Leader: Such faith calls for some singing!

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Verse 1

Great is Thy faithfulness

O God my Father

There is no shadow

Of turning with Thee

Thou changest not

Thy compassions they fail not

As Thou hast been

Thou forever wilt be

Great is Thy faithfulness

Great is Thy faithfulness

Morning by morning

New mercies I see

All I have needed

Thy hand hath provided

Great is Thy faithfulness

Lord unto me

Verse 2

Summer and winter

And springtime and harvest

Sun moon and stars

In their courses above

Join with all nature

In manifold witness

To Thy great faithfulness

Mercy and love

Verse 3

Pardon for sin

And a peace that endureth

Thy own dear presence

To cheer and to guide

Strength for today

And bright hope for tomorrow

Blessings all mine

With ten thousand beside

Psalm 23”

Verse 1

The Lord’s my Shepherd I’ll not want

He makes me lie in pastures green

He leads me by the still still waters

His goodness restores my soul

And I will trust in You alone

And I will trust in You alone

For Your endless mercy follows me

Your goodness will lead me home

Verse 2

He guides my ways in righteousness

And He anoints my head with oil

And my cup it overflows with joy

I feast on His pure delights

Verse 3

And though I walk the darkest path

I will not fear the evil one

For You are with me

And Your rod and staff

Are the comfort I need to know

Statement of Faith                            “The Apostle’s Creed”

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead, and buried;
he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins;

the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.

“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”

Verse 1

God rest ye merry gentlemen

Let nothing you dismay

Remember Christ our Saviour

Was born on Christmas Day

To save us all from Satan’s pow’r

When we were gone astray

O tidings of comfort and joy

Comfort and joy

O tidings of comfort and joy

Verse 2

In Bethlehem in Jewry

This blessed Babe was born

And laid within a manger

Upon this blessed morn

The which His mother Mary

Did nothing take in scorn

Verse 3

From God our heavenly Father

A blessed angel came

And unto certain shepherds

Brought tidings of the same

How that in Bethlehem was born

The Son of God by name

Verse 4

Fear not then said the angel

Let nothing you affright

This day is born a Saviour

Of a pure virgin bright

To free all those who trust in Him

From Satan’s pow’r and might

Verse 7

Now to the Lord sing praises

All you within this place

And with true love and brotherhood

Each other now embrace

This holy tide of Christmas

All others doth deface

Sermon: “Tidings of Comfort and Joy”

1 Corinthians 1:1-11

This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus,

            and from our brother Timothy.

I am writing to God’s church in Corinth and to all of his holy people throughout Greece.

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort.  He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.

When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. Even when we are weighed down with troubles,

it is for your comfort and salvation!  For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you.

Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer.  We are confident that as you share in our sufferings,

you will also share in the comfort God gives us.  We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters,

about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia.  We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it.

In fact, we expected to dieBut as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God,

who raises the dead.  And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again.  We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us.  And you are helping us by praying for us.  Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.
