Statement of Faith “The Nicene Creed”

We believe in one God, the Father,

Declaration of Faith                             “The Apostle’s Creed”

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

      creator of heaven and earth.

Centering Prayer

 

The Message and Scripture

“Who Is God? Who Are We?”

Genesis 1:26-28, Titus 2:11-14, Acts 1:8, 2:42-47

 

Who do you believe God to be in the middle of this situation we find ourselves in?  We’ve just recited “The Apostle’s Creed” and if we believe in our hearts what we’ve spoken with our lips, we are saying that we believe in a God who is the Creator, Redeemer and Empowerer of us.

 

But what are the consequences of these beliefs?  How do they actually play out in our day to day lives?  If we do more than confess with our lips and actually believe with our hearts that

God is our Creator, Redeemer and Empowerer,  how does it make a difference in the living of our days?  I want to propose the following thoughts:

 

If we believe that God is the Creator then it means that we are the “created” ones.

  • CreatedGenesis 1:26-28 (NLT)

Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”

 

So God created human beings in his own image.

    In the image of God he created them;

    male and female he created them.

Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”

 

Created in the image of God.  We were created and given authority to rule and steward the earth.  If you re-read the entire creation account in Genesis, you will see that after everything God created, it was acclaimed to be a good thing – a good day’s work.  It was no different on the sixth day of creation after God made man and woman.  Gen 1:31 says, “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” 

 

That’s our story.  We were created in the image of God.  If we claim that God is Creator, we have to also acknowledge that we are the created.  We may not all come down with the same exact interpretation of what that means, but can we agree that we are created in the image of God?

 

It matters because it impacts how we live in relationship to God.  If he created us, doesn’t that imply that he has authority over us?  Some right to tell us how to live?  Isn’t God in a position as Creator to tell us and instruct us on what is right and wrong and who, if not God should be able to tell us how to live?

 

What do you think about that?  Do you believe that God is the Creator and therefore has all the rights and privileges to reign over his creation?

 

  • Redeemed – The Apostle’s Creed says quite a lot about what Jesus did and will do. From Christ’s conception to birth we state what we believe.  All of it affirms that Jesus lived, died and rose again to redeem us from our sin so that we can stand before God restored to the nature he created us to have. 

 

Why do we need to be restored? Well, soon after God created humanity, sin stepped in and grabbed our attention and we fell for it. Sin robbed us of the relationship we had with God.  We gave allegiance to God’s enemy rather than God and that broke the relationship.  In order for that relationship to be restored, someone had to make it right.  That someone was Jesus, who was the perfect sacrifice and willingly gave himself up for us so that we could be forgiven of our sins and restored to a right relationship with God.

 

When we say that we believe all these things about Jesus, we are claiming both our need for redemption and that he is the Redeemer, sent from God to restore us into a right relationship with God forever. 

 

Titus 2:11-14 (NLT)

“For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.  And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.”

 

So the redemption we receive from Christ doesn’t just save us and give us fire insurance to keep us from hell, it teaches us to continue to say “no” to sin so that there can be an end to our separation from God starting now!

 

Being redeemed by what Jesus did, sets Christians apart from those who reject God.  And again, our being redeemed should shape how we live.  If Jesus paid a ransom for us, with his life, shouldn’t we live as if we’re grateful for that sacrifice?  What do you imagine that kind of gratitude looks like? How does that kind of gratitude shape how you live your life before God and others?

 

I claim the redemption of Jesus in my life.  I want to live in gratitude for what he has done by loving God with all my heart, soul, mind and strength and I want to gratefully love my neighbor as myself in hopes that I can show them who Jesus is.  But . . . I am still a sinner.  Still tempted to walk back to the very things Jesus has redeemed me from.  I need help and I wager you do too. 

 

I wonder if it’s at this next belief that we often fall down.

 

  • Empowered John 14:15-17 (NLT)

“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.”

 

When the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost it set into motion the life we know as being the church.  God the Creator, through Jesus the Redeemer, sent the Holy Spirit the Empowerer to be with believers so that we would be able to live out the faith we proclaim.  Because of the Holy Spirit we live out our empowered life: unified in Christ as those set apart by him and for him, living out our forgiveness, living in hope of the resurrection and life everlasting with God.

 

Paul lays out some qualities there are evident in those who are empowered by the Holy Spirt.  He labels them as the fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23:  “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

 

Living an empowered life as the body of Christ means that we practice and are identified by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  How are we doing?  Are we allowing the Spirit who live in us to live through us and shape our lives to match what the Creator and Redeemer have intended for our lives?

 

Do you believe in the empowering and transforming power of the Holy Spirit in your life?  How are you seeing it grow and change you?

 

Friends, it is important for us to consider what we say we believe.  It is important that our actions match up with what we proclaim, otherwise . . . well, it doesn’t look good to the world we are trying to convince to come to faith in God.  I think that I’ve spent years of my “Christian life” playing a hypocrite.  I think I’ve got that down, not living what I say I believe.  Coming up short on joy and patience and obedience.  Not allowing the Holy Spirit to empower me just because I choose to shut him down and go my own way.  But we are in a different season now.  Maybe part of the wake up call for me and for the church is to invest ourselves in what we believe to be true. And to think about where we are getting our sources of truth from – which may not always be FaceBook and the media – just sayin’!

 

What if today, we begin to attend to what we really believe to be true about God and start living it out.  You can start with the Apostle’s Creed, but maybe that’s too big of a chunk.  Maybe we need to bite off one belief at at time.  Ooooo!! Maybe that’s what we’ll focus on during our Nudge at Nine this week!!!  Please send me some aspects of God you struggle with and we can tackle them!

Those who are alone in this time – connect them with others and with hope

Provide for our needs

For the local school administration and staff as they discern the path forward

For teachers and students who are feeling lost without one another

For the massive losses that people are feeling with important events cancelled in every area of life

For churches and their leaders who are trying to figure out how to maintain what is essential in the life of the Body of Christ that we might live our our discipleship with boldness and wisdom.
