“Who Are You When Trouble Comes?”

ZOOM! (starts at 10:30 immediately after service.)

James 1:2-8

Opening Worship

How Great Thou Art

O Lord my God

When I in awesome wonder

Consider all the worlds

Thy hands have made

I see the stars

I hear the rolling thunder

Thy pow’r thru’out

The universe displayed

Then sings my soul

My Savior God to Thee

How great Thou art

How great Thou art

Then sings my soul

My Savior God to Thee

How great Thou art

How great Thou art

When through the woods

And forest glades I wander

And hear the birds

Sing sweetly in the trees

When I look down

From lofty mountain grandeur

And hear the brook

And feel the gentle breeze

And when I think

That God His Son not sparing

Sent Him to die

I scarce can take it in

That on the cross

My burden gladly bearing

He bled and died

To take away my sin

When Christ shall come

With shout of acclamation

And take me home

What joy shall fill my heart

Then I shall bow

In humble adoration

And there proclaim

My God how great Thou art

 – Prayer –

How Great Is Our God

How great is our God

Sing with me

How great is our God

And all will see how great

How great is our God

The splendor of the King

Clothed in majesty

Let all the earth rejoice

All the earth rejoice

He wraps Himself in light

And darkness tries to hide

And trembles at His voice

And trembles at His voice

And age to age He stands

And time is in His hands

Beginning and the End

Beginning and the End

The Godhead three in one

Father Spirit Son

The Lion and the Lamb

The Lion and the Lamb

Bridge

Name above all names

Worthy of all praise

My heart will sing

How great is our God

Holy, Holy, Holy

Holy holy holy

Lord God Almighty

Early in the morning

Our song shall rise to Thee

Holy holy holy

Merciful and mighty

God in three persons

Blessed Trinity

Holy holy holy

All the saints adore Thee

Casting down their golden crowns

Around the glassy sea

Cherubim and seraphim

Falling down before Thee

Which wert and art

And evermore shalt be

Holy holy holy

Though the darkness hide Thee

Though the eye of sinful man

Thy glory may not see

Only Thou art holy

There is none beside Thee

Perfect in power

In love and purity

Holy holy holy

Lord God Almighty

All Thy works shall praise Thy name

In earth and sky and sea

Holy holy holy

Merciful and mighty

God in three persons

Blessed Trinity

Reading of Scripture

James 1:2-8

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

I Choose To Worship

I choose to worship I choose to bow

Though there’s pain in the offering

I lay it down

Here in the conflict when doubt surrounds

Though my soul is unravelling

I choose You now

Chorus

I will praise You through the fire

Through the storm and through the flood

There is nothing that could ever steal my song

In the valley You are worthy

You are good when life is not

You will always and forever be my song

I build my altar right here and now

In the midst of the darkest night

It won’t burn out

For You are perfect no matter what

In the joy or the suffering

I sing it loud

Bridge

When the enemy says I’m done

I lift my praises

When my world comes crashing down

I lift my praises high

Till the darkness turns to dawn

I lift my praises

I choose to worship

I choose You now

Sermon

James 1:2-8

Last week we established James, the brother of Jesus, as the author of this letter.  We established that he was writing to the church as it was scattered away from Jerusalem.

We pick it up in verse 2 as he begins to address his audience.

James 1:2-8

Dear brothers and sisters,

when troubles of any kind come your way,

consider it an opportunity for great joy.

For you know that when your faith is tested,

your endurance has a chance to grow.

                                                            So let it grow,

for when your endurance is fully developed,

you will be perfect and complete,

                                                            needing nothing.

            If you need wisdom,

                        ask our generous God,

and he will give it to you.

He will not rebuke you for asking.

                        But when you ask him,

be sure that your faith is in God alone.

                                    Do not waver,

for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled

as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.                                                     Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.                                                                Their loyalty is divided between God and the world,

and they are unstable in everything they do.

Sermon

We Can Be Sure of Trouble Coming

  • Trouble guaranteed
  • Consider it an opportunity . . . for joy???

The Tension Trouble Brings Can Grow Our Faith

  • Trouble test’s faith: do I live within the parameters that have been set for me and remain obedient, trusting that God will sort this out OR do I take matters into my own hands, cheat a little, make my own things happen, work outside the boundaries?
  • The test is in the enduring and the growth comes from the bearing the weight, not escaping

We are different people on the other side of the trouble we endure

– Enduring the trial we encounter makes us a different person on the other side.  Even as we contemplate reopening in our county, take note of what shifts have happened in your own life.  The things you better appreciate, the time you wish to spend differently, the resurrected faith you have in the God who has taken care of you and met your needs during this time.

We may need some wisdom to navigate the new way we are

  • Maybe we arrive on the other side of a situation and are happy to be out of the mess, and realize that we are in a different place, but aren’t quite sure how we are to behave/think/live in this new way of being.
  • We may look at what everyone else is doing and get our cues from them BUT James is telling the people (and it would behoove us to eavesdrop) to ask God for wisdom. Why? Because you can’t go wrong with wisdom from God.  God is generous and wants you to benefit from His wisdom. He’s not going to make fun of you or think less of you for asking.  God wants you to have what he is eager to give.
  • Ah, but there is a catch. We need to approach God whole-heartedly.  In order to get what He wants to give, we need to go straight to him, with open arms ready to receive and our eyes, ears hearts and minds ready to pay attention.  Undistracted by other voices who would tell us there is another way to go.
  • What might some of those other voices be? In an article from the Christian Science Monitor from 2010:
  • Almost 1 in 4 American adults say they sometimes attend religious services of a faith different from their own.
  • Twenty-four percent of the public say they believe in reincarnation, and 23 percent believe in yoga as a spiritual practice.
  • Twenty-five percent of the overall public (and 23 percent of Christians) believe in astrology.
  • Fifteen percent of the public acknowledges having consulted a psychic or a fortuneteller.

https://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2010/0125/Why-some-Americans-mix-Christianity-Eastern-religions

These are examples of double mindedness.  And James warns agains this here:

Do not waver,

for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is                                    blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive                                        anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world,

and they are unstable in everything they do.

We might have a tendency to play all the odds.  We may be afraid to put all our eggs in one basket. But James is saying here, “You get what you pay for.” To receive the wisdom from God we seek, it has to be the only wisdom we seek or it’s diluted and we’re deluded!

Concl. Remember that James is primarily addressing those who have been in the faith for a lifetime. So let me say this to you followers of Christ.  These words are meant for you. If you are following Jesus, you can’t be faithful and follow any other way.  Seek one thing. Seek God. Seek God’s wisdom in this season of uncertainty and newness.  And be gentle with those who come across your path who haven’t found Jesus yet, but are looking.  Your job is not to grab their heads and make them look into the eyes of God. Your task is to love them and listen and converse and ask questions that make a way for them to see Jesus.

And for you lovely and delightful ones who are here today and aren’t sure what you believe? This is a taste of what following Jesus looks like.  Know that probably not one of us who claims to be a Christian is doing it perfectly. Growing in faith, becoming a mature Christian, following Jesus is a challenge, even on our best days, so hear the words of Scripture, these are the guide for how we are to live. It’s what we’re striving for even if we miss it.  You are invited to come along.  If you’d like more information on what that would be like just type the word, “yes” in the comments and I’ll get with you later in the week.

Statement of Faith                “In Christ Alone”

In Christ alone my hope is found

He is my light my strength my song

This Cornerstone this solid Ground

Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

What heights of love what depths of peace

When fears are stilled when strivings cease

My Comforter my All in All

Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone who took on flesh

Fullness of God in helpless babe

This gift of love and righteousness

Scorned by the ones He came to save

Till on that cross as Jesus died

The wrath of God was satisfied

For every sin on Him was laid

Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body lay

Light of the world by darkness slain

Then bursting forth in glorious Day

Up from the grave He rose again

And as He stands in victory

Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me

For I am His and He is mine

Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life no fear in death

This is the power of Christ in me

From life’s first cry to final breath

Jesus commands my destiny

No power of hell no scheme of man

Can ever pluck me from His hand

Till He returns or calls me home

Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand
